Family therapy is a way of viewing problems interactionally (ie problems occur within in our relationships) rather than viewing problems as inherent within a person. This can relieve the experience of blame, and allow families to make changes in the way they relate and respond to one another in order to reduce the symptoms that have brought the family to therapy.
In family therapy, the family is seen together, although there are times when certain parts of the family might be seen separately (eg the parents or the siblings). Family therapy is a great way for all family members to hear what others have to say and to talk about difficult thoughts and experiences, in a safe environment. Family therapy allows reflection about important relationships and builds on individual and relational strengths to make useful changes.
Family therapy can be helpful for a wide range of problems including, but not limited to, parent-child relational difficulties, running away, school refusal, adjustment to transitions in the life-cycle etc.
Family therapy appointments are often longer (up to 90 minutes) and less frequent (fortnightly) than individual therapy appointments.
Family therapy is not the same as Family-based therapy for eating disorders.

Family-based treatment (FBT), or "The Maudsley Model", is an outpatient treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa involving the whole family. It has been shown in research trials to be effective for adolescents under the age of 18 years of age, who have been ill for a short duration (usually under 3 years).
The family is seen as the best resource that the young person has to recover from the eating disorder, rather than as the cause of the problem.
Treatment focuses on strengthening the parenting team to take charge of the eating disorder. In Phase 1, weekly sessions focus on assisting the parents to take charge of eating and decisions around food, with the primary goal of re-feeding their child.
During Phase 2 of treatment, in fortnightly sessions, decisions around food and eating are gradually handed back to the teenager, with the support of his/her parents .
Phase 3 (monthly sessions) of treatment invites the family to address any issues which might have been present before the eating disorder, or may be related to normal adolescent development.
Treatment typically takes place over the course of 1 year.
